In the ever-evolving world of fashion and luxury, timepieces hold a special place as the ultimate embodiment of sophistication and style. As 2023 unfolds, watch enthusiasts and connoisseurs eagerly anticipate the latest trends that will redefine the landscape of horology. From classic designs revitalized with contemporary flair to groundbreaking innovations pushing the boundaries of craftsmanship, this comprehensive guide will navigate you through the fascinating world of watch trends, ensuring you stay ahead in the pursuit of horological excellence.
Here to stay: Salmon dials
From the early days of pocket watches to the present, colored dials have played a significant role in shaping design and style. As life evolves, the same can be said for the world of watchmaking. In recent years there has undoubtably been a rise of “salmon” / “pink” dial executions. And with a wide array of variations from different makers, you are sure to find one that works for you.
A little bit of playfulness
The 70’s are remembered for its steel sports watches, the 90’s for modest neo-vintage case shapes, might the 2020’s be noted as the period of playful dials? From micro brands dialing up the colorways to cartoon characters in date windows and even emojis making an appearance – there is no doubt something is in the air. Question is, are you on board?
Light and robust: Titanium
In the same way certain manufacturers speak to us in different ways, and over time that loyalty tends to turn into obsession. And case materials play a huge role in how we wear our watches and when. The great thing about titanium is how light and tactile it is. Titanium watches may have originated in the 70’s, but no doubt their comfort and sense of indestructability on the wrist have made them hugely popular today.
Scaling down
A key design and aesthetic evolution in recent years has been case size. Going from the larger 45mm plus sizes in the early 2000’s to the more discreet sub 40mm category today. This shift has been driven by the community and brands have taken note. It has to be noted that while watches being delivered today are thinner and smaller than ever, it is also quite some feat technically as often movements have to be created to fit these new dimensions.
Double the colors, double the fun
The rise of all things vintage, across all sectors, has been nothing short of meteoric. And nothing says vintage in the watch world quite like a good two-tone case or bracelet. No doubt a design statement (and one on the dressier end of the scale) a two-tone option is a must have in any collection – and brands are making sure that everyone will find the perfect one for their wrist.
Shape in shape
As we have seen case sizes coming down, we have simultaneously seen design-led watches gain popularity. Engineering marvels, these see a fusion of case shapes acting as a canvas for various dial layouts. Think Hermès H08 watch with its square case and round dial or the Piaget Polo which reflects its oval case to dial. Whether it’s tonneau, square or round cases you are drawn to, there really has never been a wider array of exciting options available.
