Tor Bergeron's Archive

The Swedish meteorologist Tor Harald Percival Bergeron, who lived between 1891 and 1977, is one of the pioneers among meteorologists, not only in his country but also in the whole world. Bergeron, one of Lundsberg’s first students, has done his first meteorological work while studying at the same time documenting life at school by photographing.

Bergeron became a student at the Norwegian physicist and meteorologist Vilhelm Bjerknes, when he moved to Uppsala University after the examination from Lundsberg. He graduated in Stockholm in 1916 and employed at the present SMHI in 1919, and subsequently had several positions as meteorologist in Sweden, Norway, England, France and Germany. Bergeron was later educated on the distinguished Meteorology Department of Geophysical Institute at the University of Bergen, Norway. Bergeron became a representative of the so-called Bergen School of Meteorology. He graduated och took his doctorate in Oslo in 1928 and worked as a meteorologist in Oslo from 1929.

The archive in our possession consists of approximately 1700 unknown and unpublished photographs in glass and film negatives, mainly taken between 1908 and 1930 by Bergeron. The archive consists of about 350 glass negatives, consisting of pictures of unique and expressive scenes that document life, lessons, landscapes and sporting events that took place between 1907 and 1909 at Lundsberg School, including pictures of everyday life for teachers and students.

The extensive archive of over 1300 film and glass negatives document almost all his professional travels; Bergeron’s work with his colleagues, travels with his first wife Elfriede Bergeron Schinze and lonely travels between 1917 and 1930. Photographs by pioneer researchers like Vilhelm Bjerknes, Jacob Bjerknes, Halvor Solberg, Björn Helland Hansen, Carl Gustav Rossby, Anne Louise Beck, Kristine Bonnevie, Sverre Petterssen, Harald Ulrik Sverdrup varied with photographs that documented important historical events such as meeting with Albert Einstein in Bergen and explorer Sir Hubert Wilkins returning from the Nautilus expedition and reception in Bergen.
